VI- Reading Comprehension (110 Marks)
Read the following passage, then answer the questions below:
Many things we use every day to go from place-to-place move on wheels. For example,
the bus, the motorbike, the car and many other vehicles move on wheels. One of the things that
move on wheels is the bicycle. Bicycles are important for both young people and grown-ups.
People use them for fun, exercise and work all over the world.
The history of the bike is interesting. In 1818, the bicycle had no pedals. They were added
in 1839.The pedals made bicycles move faster than the old ones. More speed was possible by
making the front wheel much larger than the back wheel. But such bicycles were dangerous to
ride. By 1900, most of the bicycle parts that we know today had been developed. They included
equal-sized wheels, brakes to stop the bike and a chain connecting the pedals to the back wheel
to transfer the movement.
Using the bike to go to school is a clean way of moving around. Unlike other means of
transport, the bike doesn’t use petrol. This means that the bike keeps the air clean. It also doesn’t
take a lot of space to park. This is why in some big cities of the world, people can only ride

Reading Comprehension ( 110 marks )

A. Read the following passage carefully, then answer the questions below:
Doctors say that there are several kinds of headaches. Each kind begins in a different place
and needs different treatment. Some of these headaches start with a change in vision or sight.
The person sees wavy lines, black dot, or white spots in front of the eyes. This is a warning
that a headache is coming. The headache occurs on only one side of the head. The vision is
blurred and the person may vomit from the pain. These headaches are called the migraine
headaches. They are more frequent in women than men. Sleep is the best cure for them
Cluster headaches, which also start in the arteries, are called cluster headaches because they
come in clusters or groups. A cluster headache lasts only for two hours and then goes away.
At the beginning of the cluster headache, the eyes become red and watery. There is a steady
pain in the head. Men have more cluster headaches than women do.
The muscle headache, which starts in the muscles in the neck or forehead, is caused by
tension. When the person becomes nervous about something, or has problems at work, or at
school, or at home, the neck and head muscles become tense and the headache starts. A muscle
headache usually starts in the morning and gets worse as the hours pass. There is a steady pain,
pressure and a bursting feeling. Usually, aspirin doesn’t help a muscle very much.
How do doctors treat headaches? If a person has frequent headaches, the doctor first has to
decide what kind they are. Medicine can help, but there are other ways to treat them. The
doctor asks the patient to analyze his or her daily living patterns. A change in diet, or an
increase in exercise might stop the headaches. If the patient realizes that difficulties at home,
or at work, or at school are causing the tension, it might be possible to make changes and
decrease these problems. Psychological problems and even medicine for another physical
problem can cause headache. The doctor has to discuss and analyze all these patterns of the
patient’s life. A headache can be also a signal of a more serious problem. So, patient should
realize that there is no magic cure for headaches, but doctors can control most of them.

VII- Summary Making (60 Marks)

Read the following passage, then do as required :
Illegal immigration is a big problem for some countries. To prevent it, certain
measurements can be applied. Creating more job opportunities in the immigrants' home
countries is a good way. If migrants can find jobs at home they will have no reason to
immigrate. Also, people need to be warned against illegal immigration before they leave
their home countries. If more people are aware about the risks, maybe fewer will break the
law. Setting penalties to illegal immigration is also important. The immigrants, though,
are not the only ones who need to be punished. Smugglers, who transport immigrants into a
country illegally need to be punished too. Finally, provide a way for immigrants to return
to their home countries. To apply this solution, governments could establish phone numbers
where immigrants can call for help in returning to their countries .

VI- Reading Comprehension (110 Marks)
Read the following passage carefully, then answer the questions below:
Our world was a lot different just a few decades ago. People spent more time outdoors.
But today, video games and hundreds of TV channels often compete with walking in the park
or planting a garden. Safety fears, pollution, and limited green spaces in cities also keep
many people indoors.
Young people now spend about six hours a day in front of a TV or a computer and less
than four minutes playing outdoors. That statistic comes from the U.S. Department of the
Interior, an agency that manages many of the nation’s parks. Not that technology is bad—
but it is not healthy for the mind and the body when time spent on technology replaces
outdoor time, says Dr. Daphne Miller, a family doctor who also teaches medicine at the
University of California, San Francisco.
Many health experts call the problem of kids not spending enough time outdoors “nature
deficit disorder.” Scientific studies support the claims that a nature deficit can harm the mind
and the body, and some health experts have started calling green time “vitamin G.” Kids who
don’t get outdoors much are more likely to have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD) and depression. They also tend to have trouble in school. Doctors believe that is
because being outdoors stimulates the mind more than sitting around indoors. Even those
who usually spend a lot of time outdoors notice a difference when they don’t get enough
green time.
Studies by Cornell University environmental psychologist Nancy Wells show that kids
who have easy access to nature areas cope with stress better. They adapt faster when they
move to a new place, and fight less with family members. The studies also indicate that kids
who move to places with more green space do better at school and that spending time outside
helps improve symptoms for kids with depression and ADHD.
The U.S. government launched the America’s Great Outdoors programmes to help make
more outdoor spaces and activities safe and accessible to all. Those programmes are
encouraging people to try fun outdoor activities such as hiking and swimming at parks,
beaches, forests, and farms. According to America’s Great Outdoors, Americans report better
health, greater happiness, and more quality family time when they get more green time.
Doctors have started giving their patients a dose of vitamin G. Dr. Miller writes “park
prescriptions” for her patients because, she says, “being outdoors is good for your health.”

Read the following passage carefully, then answer the question below:
It is well known that some cultures prefer sons to daughters. Sons are wanted because
they can work to help the family earn income. Also, sons will be able to support their
parents when the parents are old. In some countries, sons are important because the family
name will continue for another generation. This is because the wife in these cultures take
her husband's family name, and sometimes belongs to the husband's family. Not only that,
but having a daughter can sometimes cause difficulty for the family. In India, for
example, having a daughter can be a burden. Families must save a lot of money to pay a
dowry when the girl gets married. According to a survey done in 2000, people in some
developed countries would prefer to have daughters. Researchers said that parents in these
societies do not have the same economic reasons that exist in other countries, so they do not
need to have a son to help make money.
In four sentences of your own, summarize and paraphrase the passage in answer to the

 following question:

Why do people prefer to have sons in some countries?

Moreover, sons will support their parents when they get old. Also, the family name will
stay still for the coming generation. In some countries like India having a daughter
