The Third Conditional

We make the third conditional by using the past perfect after it and then would have' and the past participle in the second part of the sentence

if + past perfect, ...would + have + past participle

It talks about the past. It's used to describe a situation that didn't happen, and to imagine the result of this situation

 If she had studied, she would have passed the exam (but, really we know she didn't study and so she didn't pass) 

 If I hadn't eaten so much, I wouldn't have felt sick (but I did eat a lot, and so I did feel sick)

If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn't have missed the plane

She wouldn't have been tired if she had gone to bed earlier 

 She would have become a teacher if she had gone to university  

He would have been on time for the interview if he had left the house at nine

Read the following passage and answer the questions below

Once upon a time, a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the purpose of showing his son how the poor people live so he could be thankful for his wealth

They went by a chariot and spent a couple of days on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "Dear son, how was the trip?" "It was great, Dad." Did you see how poor people can be?" The father asked. “Oh yeah" said the son. "So what did you learn from the trip?" Asked the father. The son answered, "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end." "We have imported lights to our garden and they have the stars at night." "Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon." "We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight." "We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs."
